Before You Leave On Vacation, Check Out These Air Conditioning Tips

In between your packing and all the running around you’re doing to prepare to go away, take a few minutes to safeguard your house using these tips from the residential HVAC services team at Brummitt. They’ll take you less than 30 minutes to do, but can save you a big headache (and a suitcase-full of money).

Here’s what we recommend – and what we do ourselves – before leaving on vacation:

Your Water Heater: Cut the Power
Nobody’s going to be showering while you’re away from your home, so there’s no need to waste power keeping that tank of water hot. Simply flip the circuit breaker to cut the power. When you come home, turn it back on and you’ll have hot water in no time. Of course, if you have a tankless heater, you can skip this step.

Your Main Water Supply: Turn It Off
Coming home to a flood would be awful – and it seems like that’s when most appliance lines spring a leak for some reason. It would be bad enough if you were home to deal with it, but if you’re going to be gone for several days, you could end up with a catastrophe on your hands. Save yourself from a nightmare and turn the water supply off before you go.

Your Sump Pump: Check It Out
Not everyone’s got a sump pump, but if you have one, there’s a good reason for it. If we get a deluge of rain while you’re away catching some sun, you could end up with a flooded basement and damage so significant that it blots out your happy vacation memories. Check your sump pump to make sure it’s functioning before you leave.

Your Thermostat: Set It Wisely
It might be tempting to give your HVAC system a vacation while you’re away. Don’t do that. If you turn it off completely, you may come home to find you now have a mold problem. You can count on high humidity levels all summer, after all. Instead, turn it to a higher temperature than you’d like if you were home – but not all the way off. If you have a programmable or Wi-Fi thermostat, you can adjust the setting on your way home so your house is comfortable when you get there.

If you’ll make this your normal summer vacation routine each time you leave for a few days, you’ll avoid major problems. The residential HVAC services team at Brummitt wishes you happy trails – and will be here if you need us.
