How to Troubleshoot HVAC Problems and Malfunctions

11-9 Heater Maintenance

If you’ve run into HVAC problems, you’re undoubtedly looking for a quick solution. When it comes to losing your heat or air conditioning there’s no such thing as good timing. If you’re caught in this kind of predicament the safest route is to call a professional, but there are steps you can take if you’re determined to figure out what’s wrong on your own.

Many HVAC Problems Are Power-Related

The first possibility worth looking into is that the system’s power supply has been interrupted. If you know where to find the service panel for your system, get to it and confirm that the circuit breaker for your malfunctioning equipment hasn’t tripped. If it has, this is likely the cause of your problem. If not, check the thermostat next; some use batteries, and your issue might be resolved by replacing them. If these methods don’t lead anywhere, it’s time for the next step.

If Air Is the Issue, try to Isolate The HVAC Problem

There are several items to look into here, but the steps you take will depend on the nature of your particular problem. Here’s a rundown of what you might want to do:

    n

  • If your heating is the issue, set your thermostat to heating mode and input a temperature a few degrees higher than the current room temperature. Wait a minute, and check a vent to see if warm air is coming through.
  • n

  • If the problem is the air conditioner, set the thermostat to cooling mode and choose a temperature a few degrees below the room temp. Check the vent as described in the previous step.
  • n

  • No airflow at all means there could be an issue with an air filter or valve. Dirty filters can block or stop the flow of air or your outdoor unit might be in need of a thorough cleaning.
